Kids and Youth with ADHD Support

We Provide Online Therapy For Kids and Youth with ADHD In Ontario

Our experienced therapists help you reconnect with the present, prioritize self-care, and achieve a balanced, fulfilling life.

In ADHD therapy, kids and teens work with a therapist to learn the skills to manage the symptoms of ADHD to improve the quality of life. ADHD therapy often involves creating strategies and routines that help you work with your brain rather than battling against it.

The focus is on using your energy to build the new habits, rather than fight the old ones. Depending on the age of the child, therapy for ADHD may involve the parents as the therapist also creates strategies and routines for home and school that are sustainable for both the child or teenager and the family. Parents receiving the right guidance and support plays a major role in how successful the therapy for their child with ADHD will be.

For kids with ADHD, there is typically an impact on academic performance, social relationships and emotional regulation.  As the kids grow older, there is also an impact on self-esteem as they start to gain an awareness that some things seem harder for them than they are for their peers. Often their social relationships are getting impacted by their symptoms and this can contribute to a lower self-esteem.

Therapy can help address these symptoms and their impact of the child or teen’s child through learning coping skills for their emotions, strategies to manage the symptoms of ADHD and increase self-esteem through greater awareness and self-compassion.

How We Help You

We blend modalities such as EMDR, ACT, DBT, CBT, Mindfulness, and EFT to help you bloom into the best version of yourself.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Do you ever feel like you’re not living the life you truly want?

ACT helps people identify what really matters to them in their lives and commit to living according to those values. By focusing on what truly matters, people can lead more meaningful and fulfilling lives.

DBT helps us understand how to manage our emotions so that we can stay present and focused on what matters to us and move through our emotions. This approach helps us bounce back more quickly when facing tough challenges.

CBT empowers people to notice manage their thoughts so that they work for them, not against them. By recognizing that not all thoughts are facts, people can focus on choosing the thoughts that serve them well.

Mindfulness helps us stay in the present moment, allowing us to find more joy in our daily lives. This practice encourages a deeper connection with the here and now and prioritizing compassion and well-being during moments of overwhelm or anxiety.

EFT helps people understand the origins of their relationship patterns and emotions. By identifying and noticing these cycles, people can work towards healthier and more fulfilling relationships.

EMDR is a structured therapy approach that is different than “talk therapy” approaches. The EMDR therapist guides you to briefly focus on a traumatic or difficult memory while experiencing bilateral brain stimulation through moving your eyes in a specific way. This technique has shown to decrease the vividness and emotional intensity of trauma-related or difficult memories.

Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy For Kids and Youth with ADHD

During their session, kids and teens talk with a therapist about their feelings, thoughts, challenges, and experiences in a safe, supportive environment. Depending on the age and developmental level of the child, the therapist may use play, art, or other age-appropriate activities to help them express themselves, build coping skills, and work through difficult emotions.

The therapist works with the child or teen to help them learn and develop strategies that work for their unique situation, such as ways to manage their time better, staying organization at home and school and learning to control their focus and emotions.

When appropriate and comfortable, parents can remain present for some or all sessions, especially when first starting therapy and with younger children. This isn’t typically necessary with teens but can be reviewed as an option based on individual needs and preferences. At this time, we are only offering virtual (online video) sessions.

Signs that your child or teen may benefit from therapy include significant difficulty focusing or paying attention, impulsive or risky behaviour, difficulty with emotional regulation, such as frequent and intense emotional outbursts, struggling with time management and organization and declining academic performance or school avoidance.

Kids and teens may also suffer from low self-esteem as things seem more difficult to them than their peers. Your child can also sometimes struggle with making or keeping friends, reading social cues, or frequently get into arguments with other due to impulsivity or inattentiveness.

As a parent, you know your child best and should trust your gut – if something feels just feels “off”, it’s always worth considering taking a closer look.

Therapy for kids and teens is confidential, meaning that what is discussed in therapy generally cannot be shared with parents or others without the teens’ permission except in cases of danger or harm.

This confidentiality helps build trust and encourages open communication in therapy. Parents can connect with the therapist to share their own observations and concerns but the information shared between the child and therapist remains confidential.

The exception to the confidentiality would include a risk of harm to the child or another person.

The length of therapy varies depending on the individual and their needs. Some kids or teens may attend therapy for a few weeks or months, while others may need longer-term support.

Sessions typically happen weekly or biweekly, and the therapist will work with the family to determine a plan that best supports the therapy goals and works with their schedule.

As a parent, you can support your child or teen by being open to the therapy process, offering encouragement, and respecting their privacy. It’s also helpful to stay involved by checking in with the therapist (with your kid’s consent) to track progress and discuss how you can reinforce and encourage the coping skills and strategies at home.

With younger children, parents are very involved in their child’ ADHD therapy as the strategies and skills learned in therapy have to be consistent and supported in the home and school environment, as well.

Our individual session rate is $160 per session. Our couples therapy rate is $190 per session.

Once the session is completed, you will receive an invoice with all the necessary information to submit it to your insurance company for reimbursement. We do not bill the insurance companies directly.

We accept Credit Card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) and e-transfer to the clinic. We recommend adding your credit card information to your client profile for the most seamless process.
